Printing Icing Removal and Application |
How to remove the icing from the backing sheetThe printed icing is transported on a plastic backing sheet.Remove the contents from the packaging and leave in the open air in a room with closed windows, no open fireplaces and away from sources of damp, eg a steamy kitchen, for at least an hour to ensure the moisture content is minimal. The icing is best removed from it’s backing by holding the backing sheet tight corner to corner, then with the image side up, pulling the sheet back and forth several times across something with a sharp angle like the edge of a table, this will separate the fondant sheet away from its backing usually without problems.Holding the backing sheet corner to corner and pulling tightly across a surface with a sharp angle breaks the bond between the icing and the transport backing, then the icing will start to fall awayRounded edges do not work. |
What happens if the icing doesn’t remove from the sheetWhere you have problems removing the icing from the sheet using the table method is usually indicative of either it not being pulled tight enough across the table edge or not enough times, or more likely, the humidity of the room is high. In this situation, preheat your oven to no more than 50’c, then turn the oven OFF. place the sheet in the oven on a flat tray and leave for 2-3 minutes (this reduces the moisture content from the sheet), after the icing has cooled down it will remove easily.Alternatively, blow a hairdryer on a warm setting over the back of the sheet to remove the moisture contentNever place the sheet in the freezer and certainly never try to peel the icing from the sheet |
Cutting a sheet to sizeYou can cut the icing sheet to any shape or size you require. For straight lines use a pizza cutter ensuring that you do not cut through the backing sheet, then use the table method. For intricate irregular shapes first break the bond between the icing and the backing using the table method but do not remove the icing away from the sheet, then cut around your image to suit, afterwards separate the printed cutout from the backing using an angled pallet knife. |
How do I apply the printed sheet to the cake surfaceLeave the sheet out of its packaging in a dry room for an hour before use. To apply the printed icing to sugarpaste apply minimal moisture (water) to the sugarpaste first using a small paintbrush to make it tacky then apply the printed icing sheet onto that. Never dampen the printed icing sheet and then try to apply. If you can see any reflectiveness in the applied moisture (water) on the sugarpaste surface then there is too much water which needs to be removed/reduced or the image will just dissolve and your creation ruined.Always support the large sheet printed icing with both hands |
Removing the icing and cutting to size videosThe following are quick demonstrations of how we remove and cut icing ourselves. The quality isn’t the best as we done this on our telephone, it’s just for demo should you get stuck with the written copy on the back of the invoice |
