Printing frequently asked questions

What sizes are the edible print sheets

We have five types of icing sheet all wafer thin and base coloured white.

Our large US letter sheet measures 190.5mm x 254mm (4:3 ratio, almost A4, but it isn’t A4)

Cupcake sheets, these are 53mm diameter circles of icing and there’s 12 circles on each sheet

Fairy cake sheets contain 30 discs 37mm diameter

Large circle sheet, this contains one large circle measuring 190mm in diameter and is precut to save the hassle of trying to cut a perfect circle from a full sheet

And finally a tabloid sized sheet, this sheet measures 250x400mm and is almost twice the size of the US letter sheet

What is the cost

Large sheet, cupcake, fairy and large circle sheets with one image/file costs £4.75 per sheet + shipping

Large sheet and cupcake sheets more than 12 image files used per request £5.25 per sheet + shipping

Tabloid sheets cost £9.90 per sheet + shipping

Shipping charges are demonstrated using 1st class for UK or the most economical postal service

Where do you ship to, and what are the delivery times and rates

We only ship inside the UK and Europe

Shipping costs @ cost effective from 02/04/2013

Due to the high costs we no longer offer special delivery Saturday mornings

Due to some bad experiences with non UK postal services, we will no longer ship outside of Europe

Can I collect the print from your premises

We no longer print from our registered address, therefore all orders will be via a postal service only, no collection available

How do I get the picture to you

The fastest and easiest way for a single image is to complete the form on the printing page. If you have multiple images it’s quickest to email the images as attachments along with any comments to printing@cakescrazy.co.uk

If you are submitting your image in an MS office document or PDF, ensure your document is sized US letter with a 12.7mm border and that you send exactly as you would like it printed.  We will NOT lift images from office document files, and will only print “as is”

Can I use more than one image on a sheet

We are happy to accept upto 12 multiple images per order for use on cupcakes, filmstrips, or collages. Where more than 12 images are requested per order the cost increases by 50p per sheet.

Multiple images for cupcakes and filmstrips need to be divisible by 12 (eg:  2. 3, 4, 6, 12).

Fairy topper prints will only be produced using the same image 30 times

Can you make any amendments to the image

We can add text and make most amendments free of charge. All you need to do is state which changes you would like in the comments box when submitting a form

If you require text added then please indicate the font, size and colour required and where you think it would be best suited within the layout. Text can be curved as well as straight

Text added will be “copied-n-paste” from your instructions, spelling, punctuation or case will not be checked or corrected

Occasionally due to the image make-up, some changes are not possible, we would tell you this before you paid for an order

Most alterations can be made quickly and easily by us, however, if large scale alterations are required which in our estimation take 30 minutes or more to make then a charge of £10 will be made to cover the time taken

What finish quality should I expect

The finish will be a good representation of the original picture, if the file/image is very small it will pixelate when expanded beyond its native resolution

There is no maximum file size, in fact the larger the image the better the print, but please ensure you submit files to the following MINIMUM size if you want to fill the whole icing sheet area with your image

  • Large letter and large circle prints ensure the image is a minimum of 750 pixels along its shortest edge
  • Cupcake disc printing ensure the image is a minimum 250 pixels along the shortest edge
  • Tabloid sheet printing ensure that the image is a minimum of 1000 pixels along its shortest edge

To find out the dimensions of the image on your PC (Windows), right click the image, select Properties, and on the Details tab the dimensions of the file are listed. Example here

As a rule of thumb the larger the image the sharper the finish, however, very faint pictures, over exposed, and some old black & white pictures can sometimes generate white areas, really dark black and white images the black areas become flat in appearance and are more difficult to remove from the transport sheet.

Images with daytime scenes print better than night time shots

Images with large areas of dark colours will be more difficult to remove

Images with large areas of dark colouring adjacent to light areas can sometimes cause a slight streaking effect

Vibrant colours will always be a shade darker than screen colours

Metallic finishes (gold and silver) and anything in the magenta colour range will have a poor representation when finished with food colourings

Magenta, bright pinks and purples, are the most difficult colours to match. If your image contains large areas of the following colours then you will NOT get an exact match

Bright pinks will print more red

Bright purples print more burgundy

Sometimes we may refuse to print an image if we feel the final finish will not be acceptable

If you are expecting precision colour matching then you will be disappointed and we suggest you seek an alternative way to decorate your cake

Does Cakescrazy supply the images

No, it’s for you to supply all images.

Can we use one of the images used on a Cakescrazy Cake

Yes you can, but as these images have taken time to create therefore a supplement of £35 is added plus the price of the normal printed sheet dependant on size

What flavour is the icing sheet

The edible icing has little or no taste

How long does the sheet last

Providing the sheet is retained in the packing it was shipped in, kept away from sources of light, then it will last upto six months, the icing never goes stale it’s more the printing fades away

How is the sheet best stored

As previously mentioned, keep the icing sheet in the packaging it arrived in, don’t place anything on top of the package/sheet, and store flat in a cool area away from sunlight

Where can an edible icing sheet be used

The icing is to be used on cakes covered with sugarpaste or fondant icing only. White or light coloured icing works best as very dark colours will show through any light areas on the wafer thin fondant sheet

Under no circumstances should you place the icing onto anything other than sugarpaste/fondant icing, if you apply these directly to buttercream or similar then the icing will absorb the oils and turn yellow

What file formats will you accept

We prefer jpg file formats, however, we will also accept .bmp .tif .gif and png

We also accept MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Publisher, and Acrobat.pdf with limitations

If submitting a file in MS office format then please ensure the page is sized to “US Letter” with a 12.7mm border

MS documents are printed directly from your uploaded document file because converting these to a format for our software can cause shifting of the layout, so no sample/proof will be sent

All files have to be sent as attachments or via the form, we will not take images from links to online photo galleries or other websites.

We will NOT lift multiple images which have been cut and pasted onto MS office documents for cupcake prints

How will I know what size picture will be printed

Rather than just printing directly from the emailed image, we will request you to state the size required at point of enquiry (Excludes circular or cupcake sizes). Where no dimensions are stated we will layout the image to fill the sheet best possible.

For circular images the main subject will be centred within the circle, to ensure the image can be centred the width of the subject needs to be proportional to it’s height.  The easiest check is to get the image onscreen relative to the size of a tumbler, place a tumbler over the subject, if you can fit in the height of the subject within the tumbler the width has to fit too

Both circle and cupcake prints will have an approximate 1mm white border around the image, this is only apparent when solid dark background colours are used

What will we print

By submitting an image to us you are clearly making a statement that you own the copyright or are authorised by the owner to use the image and that you accept full responsibility of any infringements or trademarks

We have no reasonable way to check that these conditions have been fulfilled, however if we suspect that an image doesn’t meet these conditions we reserve the right to refuse reproducing it

Trade marked images are retained attached to your submission and are retained indefinitely. Should we ever be requested by an authority or court to disclose details of any orders where a breach of these conditions has been committed we will be obliged to do so.

How long does it take

Prints are dispatched the day after payment has been made, however, on average we dispatch the same day if payment is made before 1.00pm Mon - Fri. There is no printing or posting on Wednesdays. Payments made after this time are dispatched the next working day. A working day is Monday - Friday excluding public holidays.

Royal Mail on average deliver within two working days, however it can take anything upto 4 working days to arrive, therefore we suggest you allow plenty of time before you require the prints

If you require a print at short notice (2 days) then the package can be sent Royal Mail special delivery for an extra charge

We also ship to the Republic of Ireland via airmail, however, we no longer ship to Europe or the Rest of World

How will the printed sheet arrive

We dispatch the sheets sealed in a food grade bag packed in a card backed envelope

A summary of the limitations

Printed fondant is for use by professional cake makers. The icing is unlike the rice paper images found in a packet of character cake mix sets on supermarket shelves.  This product is not for the faint hearted.

The icing is shipped and stored on plastic backing sheets. The icing is hygroscopic, therefore rain or damp atmosphere will affect the ease of which these can be removed from the plastic sheet.

Storage and when planning to use needs to be performed in an atmosphere where the humidity level is below 55%. Anything higher and you will have difficulty removing from the plastic sheet.

Strong dark colours on large areas increase the moisture content of the icing, very dark backgrounds, and night time shots should be avoided.

Pinks and purple colours cannot be replicated with food colouring and print with reddish tones
